Metabo: Building our world. Together. For 100 Years!

Metabo is a 100-year-old tool brand!

Founded on 19th February 1924 by Albrecht Schnizler and Julius Closs, Metabo celebrates a century of operation, supporting professional tradespeople with every impact, bore and cut.

Established as an idea in the basement of Schnizler’s father’s bakery, this German brand saw a small start with a big impact.

Find out all about Metabo's history below!

Humble Beginnings

Not wanting to follow same career path as his parents and amid hyperinflation, Schnizler had an engineering degree and a dream: to create a product that would sell abroad as well as in foreign currencies. So that is what he did.

The Metallbohrdreher

Schnizler created the manual drill no.18 in 1923, better known as the ‘Metallbohrdreher’ or ‘metal drill’.

One year, one business partner (Closs, the son of a Nürtingen brewer), one building conversion (the former Nürtingen brewery would become the company’s HQ) and 16 dropped letters later, Metabo was born.

Going electric

In 1953, Metabo expanded its catalogue to include the first angle grinder on the market: a low-speed grinder no.763, with a speed of 1,600rpm.

Working closely with professional users in the trades and industry, Metabo made them safer, easier to handle and more powerful in time. Now, there’s something for everyone.

True to its roots

The manufacturing of every angle grinder is still rooted in its home city of Nürtingen – from idea to production to assembly.

In 1969, Metabo found a new home: a modern, spacious office located just 500m away, where it remains to this day. It was given the name Metabo Alley in 1999, when the company turned 75.

International focus

Schnizler always had the international market in mind, ever since he developed the first drill in 1923. He’d already had a bit of success with it in July of the same year with a large-scale order of 500 type 18 drills for the English market.

But progress really came in this area after the war. From the 1970s onwards, Metabo went above and beyond, tapping into new markets on every continent.

Putting it into practice

To become the trailblazing brand it is now, Metabo had to understand its users' needs from the get-go. From all corners of the globe. That meant understanding the practical solutions for each market, including ergonomic features and safety standards.

Remaining steadfast in their ambitions, today Metabo has gained the trust of so many. Renowned Japanese brand HiKoKi even took over its shares in 2015, working to champion the global market.

Together, they’ve triumphed: from the delivery of the LiHD battery, the world’s first 18V battery offering more than 1000W of continuous power. To the world’s first large cordless angle grinder for 230mm discs. They’ve proven that their founder’s vision never fell short.

The only way is up from here.
